ASD, ADHD and school: one plan for home and the classroom
If your child has ASD, ADHD or both, school can be the hardest part of the day, for them and for you. I'm Charming, a trilingual BCBA in Hong Kong, and I help you, your helper and, with your consent, your child's school use the same simple plan, so what works at home also works in class. We start with a free 15-minute call: tell me what your child's school has shared with you, and we'll work out the next step.
Does this sound like your child?
- The teacher says they can't focus, sit still or stay with the task.
- They hold it together at school and fall apart at home.
- Changes in the timetable, a new teacher or a new classroom bring big reactions.
- Group work, recess or lining up goes badly.
- Homework takes hours and ends in tears.
- Mornings are a battle, or going to school feels impossible.
These can come with ASD, ADHD or both. You don't need a label to start the conversation.
ASD, ADHD, or both?
ASD (autism spectrum disorder) and ADHD are two different conditions. They often appear together, and many children have both. A pediatrician, psychologist or other qualified professional makes the diagnosis; I don't diagnose. What I work on is what happens day to day: focus, routines, transitions, social moments and school behaviour, whatever the label is.
How I help
Listen and understand
We talk through what's happening at school and at home, and what the school has shared with you. I never contact a school without your express consent, and only once you have shared your child's needs with them. With that consent, I can speak with the school by email, WhatsApp or phone.
Build one shared plan
A short, clear plan that you and your helper can follow at home, in the same words and the same steps. With your consent, I share the key strategies with the school by email, WhatsApp or phone, so the classroom matches.
Practise and adjust
I coach you and your helper, check in as things change, and adjust the plan as your child grows.
School readiness and interviews
Before a first day, a new school year or a school interview, I help your child arrive prepared and at ease: the routines, communication and confidence that let them meet the school as themselves. Once they have started, I help keep routines steady through the first few weeks. I can't promise a place at any school. My work is to support your child, not to secure an offer.
What I do, and what I don't
I do
Behaviour support, routines, school readiness and interview preparation, coaching for parents and helpers, and, with your express consent, communication with your child's school.
I don't
Diagnose ASD or ADHD, give medical advice or medication guidance, guarantee a place at any school, or replace the support your child's school provides. I work alongside your child's doctor, psychologist and school.
Questions parents ask
Do we need a diagnosis first?
No. Many families call while waiting for an assessment. If you have a report, it helps, but please don't send it through the website form.
My child has both ASD and ADHD. Where do we start?
We start with what is hardest right now, usually school mornings, transitions or homework, and build from there.
Will you speak to my child's school?
Only with your express consent, and once you've shared your child's needs with the school. I usually communicate with the school by email, WhatsApp or phone. If you would rather I didn't, that is entirely your choice, and I will support you and your helper directly.
Can you work with our helper?
Yes. Helpers often carry out the plan every day, so I train them alongside you.
Which languages do you work in?
English, Cantonese and Mandarin.
Is it in person or online?
Sessions with children take place at a clinic in Hong Kong. For older children with busy schedules, some sessions can be online, alongside in-clinic sessions, but support for children can't be entirely online. Parent consultations can be online or in person. Overseas families are welcome to start with a free 15-minute video call.
